--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Physicians that are taking family's rights away from them. One case the physician stated that due to the patients age and the fact that the patient could not transport, they were wanting to discontinue the dialysis treatments. The family disagreed .They felt that they still enjoyed their mother and it was a family decision, the physician told the family that they would not refer to any other group of physicians, nor would they provide services. The family was upset and felt that it was not the decision of the facility, but they are the ones who feel that she should not be put down.<

>As far as transfer, are we now going to see doctors who are going to deny care due to transfer problems? Are we now going to only do the easy ones?<
><
>We have written a letter to the physicians and Gam
o to honor family wishes. Have not heard their response yet. The patient has died, but the family still wanted the physician to realize that they should not decide who lives and dies against family wishes. <

The nephrologist should have referred the patient to another nephrologist who would have taken the patient. There has always been a nephrologist in my town that would take all of the older & sicker patients that no other nephrologist would take. I cannot understand why this doctor would not refer this patient to someone else.

that doctors could make a recommendation to d/c tx. but not actually make the decision to do so. That rite is up to the pt. and if they can't decide whoever has the legal responsibility to do so. Did this pt. have a healthcare proxy, and if so is it recognized in the state of residence? Lin.

The patient had her daughter as her legal representative. I personally feel that it was a family decision.<

In all the years I worked in healthcare it was not the doctors who decided if a person should live or not, receive treatment or not. It was always the pt. and their families, and I think that's the way it should be. I'm wondering why dialysis would be any different! Why do dialysis pts. not have that rite? :"> Lin.

has referred to the fact that MOST not all, Doctors do believe they are in one form or another some sort of God. Please do not take offense anybody about the reference to God. They should have no right in taking away the dialysis from this patient unless it is according to him/her and the families wishes. Then there are ways of making the end better for all involved. He should of followed the families request not his belief. We had the opposite with Brent, with the neurologist :"> telling us he had limited
ain function when they did the EEG's and that we should keep him attached to the respirator at any costs. bleep the guy coded 8 times in 4 days for periods of an hour twice, and he wanted us to keep him going. Even his primary Doctor agreed with us on this decision as well as the Cardiologist...they both knew that the damage done to the mind and other parts of his body were not for anyone to have to live with. Sometimes a good lashing of reality is needed by those that think they are above the human race......if only the shoe was on the other foot.......
