Hi

I've seen many posts on many sites as to why home dialysis isn't as big as some think it should be. And I will tell that I wonder that myself. But over the last 9 months I looked into the subject. And myself now being on home dialysis I can see more clearly why this has not happened.

Home dialysis makes the pt the sole boss, tech , nurse etc. And let know one kid you that it is a walk in the park. The walk in the park would have been to go to a center where one could have the same basic set up you might have as in a hospital. That is to say peace and quiet, people who understood that they held your very life in their hands. A place where I could my aging mother who has alz and have sit next me while my tx was going on. But this did not happen, I understand that some center do permit people of a certain ageand/or who can show that they can conduct themsevles in a proper manner. The last thing I would want would be just more people adding to the stress.

The reasons for more pts not being home tx is more complex that anyone answer. While in center I've talk to folks and the two big reason that came across were the fear factor (what happens in case), the other is that pts like the idea of just going three days a week to get tx. No fuss no mess you the pt don't have the job of seeing to your tx on a daily basic.

Don't get me wrong .now that I'm home I love it, I can make my own hrs. I can sit and read or watch tv(without Tv wars) or listen to my XM radio. or nap, I have an egg timer to get me to get my # every half hr. The home tx in my mind still have a way to go , but I'll take home every time.

I know Home Hemo is not yet available where I live and that home hemo you need special plumbing alterations and buttonholes. (I am in Canada so NxStage is NOT available). Fear is a HUGE factor but of course not the only one. Thanks for this post.
