Just read an article on the other board about the possibly within the next 5 years trials could begin on implantable bioartifical kidneys. If this ever becomes a success story, I think the industry will be done.<
>Hard to believe it could even be possible to have an artifical kidney and not need dialysis.

the idea has been kicked around for years and it is no more of a reality than it was 30 years ago. so lets quit dreaming and work for better more humane treatment. adaquate treatment is hear now but its takes the patient getting involved.

I don't see this happening with as much money that the providers are making on dialysis. This whole idea will be squashed long before it ever reaches one patient.

Your analysis of the situation is backwards. You are forgetting it is the government that is paying for the treatments not the industry. And if the government can save money by the bioartifical kidney which is very likely the shift of payment will change. In fact, in the article it has already stated they had received a grant to carry on with the research. Bioartificial means some of the artifical kidney will be man made it will also incorporate stem cells. These stem cells are suppose to be able to produce the EPO our bodies need. So the cost of this drug could also be eliminated. However, there are some of people who come here, who will always believe, there are no good people out their doing the right thing. Nor do they have the faith good will prevail over evil. For those I feel sorry as I would think this would be living in a world of hopelessness.

Sheesh it would be great if that happened but...what are you waiting for? A good transplant is what you need now. If you are not on one or more lists then get going! Five years is a very long time...get that new kidney as soon as you can. Good luck!

Livecam not every needs a transplant now. Some patients are not candidates and some patients have had bad luck with transplants. Although I agree this would probably be the best option for most patients it isn't for me and some others. There is the issue of the drugs required for keeping a transplant and there is the issue of a reduced immune system. I do know for a fact that someone received a transplant from his son and ended up with cancer soon after. I am happy for those who have received a transplant and are doing well...but to promote it as if it is for everyone is misleading. Also its not totally unusual for patients to have to wait 5 years on a list and then there is also the issue of being able to pay for the drugs.<
