Have received notification that we will be meeting with Thomas Scully face to face to hear what we have to say.<
>This meeting is going to be in DC, but it appears that this is the first time we will be able to meet and hear his side and have ours heard.<
>I will be taking back concerns, and we are fortunate to have this opportunity, and get to the bottom of things.<

When is the meeting? Who, besides yourself, will be attending? Is this a meeting or a hearing?

This site has never been made up of "nobodies". If that were true the meeting wouldn't be coming up.<
>I also don't believe the attitude US vs THEM will accomplish anything. Like it or not we need to convince Mr. Scully that our point of view is correct so he can work WITH us. We won't get very far if we walk in there acting like he is an adversary. The quickest way I know to get people to walk away from you is to start treating them as if they are the enemy. This isn't to smart when you really do need their help.

This meeting is not about them versus us. To be heard in the beginning we had to fight for every inch. We are well beyond this.<
> This would be a waste of everyones time and money if we dont use this to maximize what are concerns are. Personally I want to reclaim my life. <
>According to our attorney's this means to them that we have arrived and the struggle is more forward and needs to be more professional. We are being taken serious. The mud slinging days are over.<
>We are changing as an organization and we will speak our truths, but we need to realize they now are into recognizing what we stated all along. We are a organization that has had to fight from the ground up. We are now at the point of putting the issues on the table and they cant ignore anymore.<

Think it is important that the group goes in to this meeting with a agenda addressing issues and attempting to get Mr. Scully support of the issues. Also, important that the issues addressed with Mr. Scully be ones he has influence over. <
><
>Some of the issues , stark laws, ending re-use, poorly trained staff, under staffed units, ending patient abuse and patient dumping, home dialysis, etc.

I think you all have missed the point on the "Hey DEO" post. When DEO first started out, the industry did consider DEO just a bunch of "nobodies" making a fuss over the staus quo. Yes, we are far beyond that now. We have proved to the industry that we are not just a bunch of nobodies out there making a fuss. We do have issues, we have an agenda. We advocate for patients and in cleaning up this industry. <
> But until a year or 2 ago, they still considered us "nobodies" and there lies the pun so to speak. We have proved them wrong. DEO has arrived and we should all be thankful for that. Never forget where we came from as it will remind us all of how far we have come. We still have lots more work to do. If we lose our sense of humor, we will lose our way. So relax everyone. We have another obsticle to overcome. Let's do it!!!!!! <

with Missed Point. Although I haven't been around too long, and had never heard of DEO until I thought I was going to have to go on dialysis, I have realized all the hard work that Arlene, Founding RN, and others have done to make DEO a nationally known organization. In fact, Arlene helped me get copies of my medical records, and I must say, that was the fastest response from any physician's office that I have ever received.<

>But...there are still issues, and we still have a long way to go to accomplish resolution on those issues. We still have to hang in there and keep after these people to get the job done! While new, I'm now here for the long-haul, and we WILL get it done!!!

the only reason the meeting is taking place is because they are forced to. they have known of the problem for a long time. the senate hearing reinforce there knowledge of the problems. the main problem they have already spent the money buying patients puting people on the pay roll that have nothing to do with treatment. if they do the reforms it going to cut very deeply into the income of several people and put a lot of none necessary out of a job. in fact it is going to
eak a lot of companies. there is no way that they can meet the debt for the payment of the patients if they are forced to spend the money on treatment. in the majority of cases the payment of debt is much greater than the cost of treatment. this is my opinion only.

The operative word is "were" nobodies; now we're somebodies with voices that need to be heard! Hooray Arlene and crew!!!!<
>Dialysis is a business, make no mistake. It's a big business that is top heavy, too many doing nothing at the top, and getting paid a lot to do it. Not unlike more than lots of other big businesses it needs restructuring and accountability. Look at the other companies like Enron and Tyco Labs for instance, they would not have changed had they not been caught spending money taking huge bonuses and paychecks at the top while telling those at the bottom

"times are tough" we are laying off, cutting costs, robbing your pension fund ect. <
>I love it when some say that dialysis providers don't make much money and it's no longer profitable, and then another unit springs up or certain companies go around buying up all the smaller units. No one does this unless there is a profit to be had; whose kidding who? Yes, dialysis industry needs "restructuring" and it starts with suggesting accountability, and it starts in DC. Lin.

...to see if this becomes part of the adminsitrative sheel game or if something more than lip service will come out of it. The government has become so cozy with corporate America that I doubt any smiling face on that end is capable of the necessary compassion to act. Good Luck!

My personal opinion is that the meeting will be one that many will be there to speak with. At least we are at the table and will have the oportunity to iron out the issues. No one has to tell me what the government is capable of doing....we did have the Senate hearings with promises that weren't kept. Once shame on them, second time shame on us.<
>I am going up there with a positive attitude, but am also realistic. Many of us are not trusting, as promises were not kept, nor were any changes made.<
>But rest assured, we are not that naive any more. But will put our concerns on the table and see if we are taken serious.Personally this is not the same organization that was 3 years ago. We have not stopped in our quest or compromised on our principles.<
>It is election year and if the government choses once again to continue business as usual, I for one am quite capable of calling in our friends and holding signs and screaming from the mountain tops. For one there is no quitting until patients have a level playing field.<
>Personally I will go up and have an open mind, if they also are serious about listening to what our issues are.<
>It doesnt take long to figure out the government and their corporate ties. But read history when the citizens say enough and go public.<
>Public awareness may end up the only way, who knows, but we will try this way also. But we will see how it goes up there and have an open mind, but we will not sell out. They have known what the issues are and the conditions and have done nothing. Lets wait and see. I dont care how it is done, only that it is done. Too many patients have died fighting and the sooner this is cleaned up the better it is for the patient.<
>For one I will keep an open mind, but need be I can hold a sign up with the best of them. We have this story coming out publically anyhow...it would be nice for the government to do what they are voted in to do for once.<
>Lets see and one must try all doors that open. We will still continue forward, and we have the ability to get the word out anyhow. Not for one minute do we not know that these have not been out for the patient. I for one am going to go through every door that we have the opportunity to go through and to listen and keep an open mind. <

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

this has been. All my life I've heard about how we live in a democracy and how ours is the greatest nation on the earth. Am I imagining this or is this what everyone else was taught and believed, too? But in reality, when one sees a wrong, such as with the dialysis industry, and tries to get it corrected, our polititians are not always accessable or honest. So, what a lesson this has been on what citizens encounter with our govt. and what can be done to be heard in our system. <
><
>I think the only thing good about this struggle is that once one figures out how to get the wrongs changed in the dialysis industry, the same steps will apply to other situations that need to be changed in society. <
><
>I'd hate to think what our country would be like if no one cared to stand up to the wrongs. This situation has taught me that only a small percentage are the caring ones - the rest just go on their merry way or get into positions of power to write unjust laws. In the end we will all be accountable for our choices.

In nature the young animals that fight for nourishment are the one's who get it and thrive. The weak ones are continually shoved out of the way, never to be nourished and eventually to die. <
>It is much the same, if not exactly like that in dialysis, and in the USA. Our elected officials only have so much time, caring and money to go around, and if we let another group push us out of the way they will be "noruished" and we will suffer the ill effects. All it takes is a few sympathetic ears; I hope they are listening now. Way to go Arlene!!! I wish I could go too; can shove with the best of them. Lin.

We should hear this week about the meeting. It is my understanding that the top CMS HCFA officials will also be there. This will finally after all this time to have our issues on the table.<
><
>We have fought hard, but one finds a
ick wall, you dig under it or have everyone lift the other one over. It has really amazed me that a group with NO money can make a difference. We have and will continue to do so.Sometimes you go around it. But you need to continue daily and slowly you get there.Just never give up! This is our government and this is the American way.<
><
>It is exciting to me to be able to finallllly get answers face to face. To come to this pass in the road means that we have a responsibility to be direct and not waver in our beliefs. I have always been an optimist (believe it or not) and would love nothing more than to have action from the government and not just promises. But one must have an open mind on both parts. In order to be effective, we must state our truths as we see them and let the government either make changes or not. We still will have the public awareness. But the sooner this is resolved, the less patients are lost and the rights of the patients will be honored. We have lost to many of our patients that have been with us, it hurts everytime.<
><
>We will not slow down, but our want list is not that much, nor is it not do able. It is doable. Hopefully there will be a win win for all.

"Like me, you could.....be unfortunate enough to stumble upon a silent war. The trouble is that once you see it, you can't unsee it. And once you've seen it, keeping quiet, saying nothing, becomes as political an act as speaking out. Either way, you're accountable."
