Signs and Symptoms of Chronic Renal Failure (CRF)<
><
>If you have only mild CRF you may not have any symptoms and your renal dysfunction can only be detected by laboratory testing.<
><
>With mild to moderate CRF, you may have only vague symptoms, that include nocturia (getting up at night to go to the bathroom, because you can not concentrate urine), lassitude, fatigue and decreased mental acuity. Your serum BUN and creatinine will be elevated.<
><
>In advanced CRF, you will begin to develop more symptoms. These will include coarse muscular twitches, peripheral neuropathies (numbness/tingling in the legs/arms), muscle cramps, anorexia (no appetite), nausea, vomiting, stomatitis (sores in mouth), and an unpleasant taste in the mouth.<
><
>Gastrointestinal bleeding and ulceration are common, and hypertension is present in about 80% of the CRF patients. The hypertension is usually related to hypervolemia (retention of fluid). Cardiomyopathy, renal retention of sodium and water, may lead to congestive heart failure or dependent edema.<
><
>The skin may appear yellow-
own in color, and this is a result of urea from sweat crystallizing on the skin and is known as uremic frost. Pruritus (itching) is very uncomfortable for some patients. Abnormal bone mineralization from hyperparathyroid function, elevated serum phosphorus, or low or normal calcium level, calcitricol deficiency, and hyperparathyroid bone disease (osteitis fi
osa) is seen in renal osteodystrophy. Osteomalacia is seen in about 5% of the cases of CRF, and results from chronic exposure to aluminum salts that are used as phosphate binders and dialysalte contamination.<
><
>Abnormalities with lipid metabolism also occur in CRF.
"Like me, you could.....be unfortunate enough to stumble upon a silent war. The trouble is that once you see it, you can't unsee it. And once you've seen it, keeping quiet, saying nothing, becomes as political an act as speaking out. Either way, you're accountable."
