Chicago-AP -- A program to improve kidney dialysis appears to narrow the racial and gender gaps in the quality of care given to patients. But researchers aren't sure why.<
><
>The program included educating health-care workers with workshops and reading material about how to improve the care of patients getting dialysis. A doctor says it's possible doctors in the program wound up giving women and minorities care better tailored to their needs.<
><
>Blacks and men in the program were still less likely than whites and women to receive adequate kidney filtering on the dialysis equipment. But the differences became smaller.<
><
>The researcher is at Case Western Reserve University. The study is in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Sorry, but I wasn't aware there was a gap! I'm white and a woman and know that I don't receive any better care than anyone else in the unit. Have you read any studies that suggest there is any difference in care amongst different groups of people, and if so could you please post the links; I would be most interested in reading them! We all should be getting quality of care as healthcare consumers. Lin.

...can post most anything here on this board. It is an open forum. There are a few rules, like being couteous etc...but this is an interesting topic that only needs to be disected by people on this board. There are studies all around that pop up and they always seem to amaze me. Will go look into this one.

the patients who get the better care are those who have something in common with the staff (i.e. casino gambling, drinking, sports, partying, favorite tv shows, movies etc.). There's this one patient who is an alchoholic and the doctor and staff love to joke with him about the wet ones he will consume the minute he gets out of dialysis. I find men can be very popular patients. Staff likes very humorous men who will go into details with them like who they are going out on their wives with. Just an observation.

IN THE UNITS THAT I HAVE BEEN IN ITS THE PATIENTS THAT LIE THEIR AND PLAY DEAD WITHOUT DIENIG. THAT ARE THE MOST FAVORITE. THAT IS THEY WALK IN ARE COMPLIANT WITH THEIR WEIGHT GET HOOKED UP WITH OUT A WORD IMMEDIATLY GO TO SLEEP AND FINISH. THEN GET TAKEN OFF WITH THE LEAST AMMOUNT OF CONVERSTATION AND LEAVE.<
><
>THE STAFF ALWAYS HELD THEM UP AS THE PERFECT PATIENT.<
><
>AS FAR AS THE BEST DIALYSING, I WOULD SAY IT WOULD BE SOME ONE WHO WAS VERY WEALTHY AND WAS DIALYZED AT OUR CLINIC.

I'm compliant, but no way am I going to sleep and no way do I keep my mouth shut. I call em like I see em. I guess that erases the "advantage" of being white and female! Lin.

Lin,<
>Keep staying awake & keep talking! I wish we had more patients that were as concerned about their care!<
>We have patients that are very "well-to-do", and patients that are on a limited income-no one gets preferential treatment because of their "name" or income.I would have noticed (and probably said something!) if someone was treating a patient differently.<
>As far as I'm concerned, it doesnt matter if you have pointy ears & green blood-you still get treated that same! LOL

Hope you didn't think I was serious about that advantage, lol Yikes, if my blood turns green and my ears pointy I'm calling the network!!! Did you ever consider moving to Jersey? I know a not too bad unit that could use more staff! Gee, if they even knew I was trying to recruit staff................ Lin.

LOL, Lin!<
>I'm white & female (fortunately, or unfortunately???). Sometimes I wish I were part Vulcan, so that I could think more logically sometimes!<
>You ought to come to Wild, wonderful West Virginia to visit sometime! <
>I guess a lot of the reason why I treat everyone the same is that I think about how I would feel sitting in that chair, or if it were my Mom, or
other, or any family member. How would I want to be treated?<
>If there would ever come a day that I would forget abnout that, then I need to find another jod or profession.

Now I fear I will tomorrow be checking out the techs. to see who has pointy ears lol<
>You either get "it" or you don't, and you do!<
>You never know I might just show up in W.VA.. Son and wife are near DC.. When son was in Navy was stationed out of Norfolk for almost six years. Often on leave he and buddies would visit. He would talk of mountain biking on skyline and said the mountains were
eathtaking. All we have in Jersey is hills (ski areas) but you are welcome to come visit here too. Lin.

THanx, Lin!<
>Just want to let you know that I appreciate your positive attitude, despite everything that

you've probably been thru. Sometimes you wonder if you really make a difference in someone's life-and I feel that you have!<
>I think one reason I live where I do is because of the mountains, and that the majority of people in WV are good people ("salt of the earth", as my Mom says..)<
>Keep at it, Lin!

I just think that it's futile when one side fights the other, when one group looks down on the other, ect.. Predjudice has no place in dialysis! If you are a patient it doesn't matter WHO takes care of you, just how they do it. If you are staff, it also doesn't matter; all pts. deserve the best of care. Dialysis has enough problems; prejudice should not exist. Just my opinion! Lin.

True that, and I think a great opinion, Lin. LOL
