Recently my Hemoglobin dropped into the 10's so I started getting EPO. My labs came up to 11.9......as we now know, the FDA has issued warning that it is dangerous to give dialysis patients EPO if the hemoglobin is above 12.0. THe unit claimed it was the company policy to give EPO if the hemoglobin is under 13.0. And then to keep giving it butg to reduce the dosage. I let them give me EPO for 2 treatments after the labs were 11.9 then started attempting to refuse it......

A recent article in the Biologic Drug Report ".......Epogen is used to treat anemia in some 1,300 DaVita centers that perform dialysis, a procedure to filter waste from the blood of patients with kidney-disease.
Gary Lieberman, an analyst at Stanford Group, said that for DaVita, buying Epogen from Amgen -- then obtaining reimbursement for each dose administered to dialysis patients -- makes up about [b:4667f37526]44 percent of the company's earnings [/b:4667f37526]before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization......"

Patients with chronic kidney failure had an increased number of deaths and of non-fatal heart attacks, strokes, heart failure, and blood clots when ESAs were adjusted to maintain higher red blood cell levels (hemoglobin more than 12 g/dL). :!:
