I always felt they were intrusive and a pain in the *badword*. Of course they have a job to do but how many people does a person really need to be approached by after a long day at work and while dealing with dialysis. <
><
>In my case I kept my ducks in a pretty neat row. I pushed myself onto the transplant list and started traveling 2 months after starting dialysis. Everything that needed to be done was done, appointments were not missed etc. <
><
>Everyone is different. I kept my job, had good insurance, and great support at home. Not everyone has those advantages so for others the SW's probably help alot.

I also find social workers useless. They buck when you ask for help when traveling. I get no help whatsoever when trying to change times to attend a seminar. The for-profits need to make this a volunteer position. From what I am seeing all they do is arrange transportation for patients that need help in getting to clinic. And possibly if you need help financially for medications they may have a place to get it for a month or two. Other than that she comes in at 9:00 am and runs straight to her office.

I have had two diffrent situations where social workers have proved who they worked for and why they were always prying into what everyone was doing. Which I will share with you.<
><
>ALSO WAS IT A SOCIAL WORKER WHO TOLD THAT THE MAN WAS GETTING A DEVOIRCE AND WAS TAKEN OFF THE TRANSPLANT LIST?<
><
>I was dialyzing in a not good but not bad clinic. The social worker their was one that kept wanting to hugh you as if you were so pitifull and this would save you for a nother day. My husband became unemployed and the clinic was not receiving there huge profit on top of the Medicare payment. So I filled out all the paper work to have the chareges waved for a while and gave it to the social worker. The social worker over heard me say to a friend that we were going to get a check that would help feed my eight year old and keep the roof over our heads. The reason I know she hear was that, another friend was in the hall out side this WITCH'S office later that day and heard her call billing and told them of the check and to go ahead and start billing me agin and sure enough in three days I received a back bill for <
>the entier balance due.<
><
>THE MORAL OF THE STORIE NEVER FORGET WHO THEY WORK FOR!!!!!<
><
>Many years latter I was in the Down right Crappy Institue for dialysis in Jacksonville, Florida. This social worker would tell you how she would pray for you. And always wanted to know things about your life. At this time I was trying for the Transtplant list At the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville (((GREAT TRANSPLANT CENTER WILL TAKE PATIENTS FROM ALL OVER & PLAY BY THE RULES)))(((FIRST ON THE LIST FIRST OFF WHERE POSSIBLE)))<
><
>My husband called on the cell phone and told me he had an offer to go back down to Ft. Lauderdale where we were from the SOCIAL WORKER HEARD THE CONVERSATION AND WHEN I HUNG UP RUSHED OVER TO ME AND SAID SO YOUR MOVING WHEN! I said hold on a moment you were eves dropping and NOTHING IS FINAL I DO NOT WANT THIS TO BE PUBLIC KNOWLEDGE. I WILL TELL YOU FAR IN ADVANCE WHEN AND IF THIS IS GOING TO HAPPEN.

THE SOCIAL WORKER OF THE DOWN RIGHT CRAPPY INSTITUTE TOLD EVERYONE AND THEIR DOG I WAS MOVING. <
><
>I got calls from the DM she wanted me to go ahead and give up my morning space because we were moving. The TRANSPLANT team was upset that I did not notify them. Billing wanted my new insurance and new address.<
><
>I TOLD THE SOCIAL WORKER THAT I WOULD IN FACT PRAY FOR HER TO HELP HER WITH HER OBVIOUS STRUGGLE WITH MORALS AND ETHICS. (WHICH I DID.)<

>THEY ARE HIRED AND PAID BY THE UNIT THEY HAVE <

I love your spin on Down right Crappy Institute!<
>Do not share information that you feel is confidential with anybody at dialysis. Because they all gossip to each other. i.e. I was at the clinic and my machine kept
eaking down so the pct informed me to go to the chair across the way and sit next to Jane Doe (whom all the pct's gossip to) when Jane Doe screamed my medical condition across the clinic and she did not want me sitting next to her. THIS WAS NOT PUBLIC INFORMATION.<
>I pity the poor jackass's that have nothing better to do than share a patient's confidential info with other patient's.

The social worker will only help pts. if it doesn't interfere with her relationship with the company she works for. I get the impression she is in the unit MAINLY to work out financial problems so that the co. gets paid.<
>I only divulge a certain amount of personal things, but keep the reall nitty gritty to myself. If I need help I'll get it somewhere else but not in the unit. Lin. (my life is not an open book!)

OH MY!! I am so embarressed for my profession. That is not what Social workers are supposed to do in the dialysis setting. I find I get in trouble with my company because I tend not to follow their commands.

they are often asked to choose between the needs of the pts. and the wants of the company they work for, and their jobs! The phrase "in between a rock and a hard place" comes to mind. Lin.

God Bless you BB (social worker). It is people like you that are not the enemy but are fighting hard to do the right thing and part of the solution. We recognize how hard that is to do in the current environment. But hang tight change is coming soon.<
><
>I find it DISGUSTING that they use a position that by definition (aid for the needy, philanthropy, position to improve health, happiness and overall well being) totally enlists trust and then manipulates this position to defile the patients lives further by using information gained by this trust against them. Could there be a better representation of evil and a perfect example of A SYSTEM TOTALLY OUT OF CONTROL ??<
> <
>THANK YOU!!!<
>TO ALL THE WORKERS THAT FIGHT THE SYSTEM WHERE THEY CAN. WE KNOW WHO YOU ARE BECAUSE YOU HAVE TOUCHED OUR LIVES AND HEARTS BY EASING OUR BURDEN AND PUTTING YOUR SELF AT RISK. YOUR SELFLESS DEEDS WILL BE FOREVER REMEBER.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The devolution of social work under the clinic profit model is probably the saddest afront to the patient, and patient's family. What is social work in a chronic survival environment? The goal is not to be used by the front office bean counters to shake down patient ability to pay. Don't accept this responsibility! It only takes a little courage compared to strapping on a chair 3 days a week and submitting to the dialysis process. So, is it only about putting out a semi-sincere "how are you feeling today?" or is it ensuring that relationships are
idged for survival and team work of all involved with understanding and more difficult yet, catalyzing genuine and tedious communication between the patients, families, clinicians, nurses, techs and others for better outcomes for all...? Bye the bye, how does a social worker in the current paradigm measure their results and performance?

I had to laugh out loud at my social worker, several treatments ago she handed me a form wanting to know all of my assets and liabilities for my household. Yet when I told her to contact my insurance company to see just how much they will pay as a secondary plan she quickly told me this was not her job! I guess her job entails her to snoop into my personal finances to see how much cash the company can grab. But not to do the leg work in order to get the insurance company to pay the medicare left overs.

Remember when a patient was taken off the transplant list due to a leak that the wife was divorcing the patient?<

not on transplant list. The provider is the one that acclaims to be "he/she gives life" and has been investigated a few times by government. OOPS- there I go again sinking another ship.
