WellBound, Inc., the First Company to Deliver and Support the Full Spectrum of Home Dialysis Therapies through Dedicated Regional Centers, Launches Network of Regional Offices in Partnership with Nephrologists<
><
>New home dialysis options, coupled with a fast-growing population of kidney patients, critical shortages in medical personnel and burgeoning dialysis costs spurred WellBound's dramatically new approach to kidney disease treatment<
><
>REDWOOD CITY, Calif., Fe
uary 24, 2003 ? WellBound, Inc., a new company focused on advanced clinical interventions for patients with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), announced today that it is launching a network of dedicated, regional centers to better support nephrologists in the management of their chronic kidney disease patients. These centers will respond to the fast-growing demand for alternatives to in-center dialysis treatments. WellBound, with headquarters in Redwood City, Calif., also announced today its first regional center in San Jose, Calif., as well as commitments to develop additional regional centers in 2003.<
><
>Critical Need for New Approaches to Kidney Disease<
>Chronic Kidney Disease is a worldwide health problem. The growing incidence of kidney disease, coupled with poor outcomes and high costs, dictates a new approach to managing care for patient with CKD.<
><
>Kidney disease affects an estimated 19 million people in the U.S. alone, and the number of people facing kidney failure is expected to double to over 500,000 by the year 2010. At the same time, the U.S. is facing a critical, long-term shortage of clinicians, both doctors and registered nurses. These factors are straining capacity among in-center hemodialysis centers and making the economics of these centers less able to meet the growing demand for services.<
><
>Although home-based renal therapies have been available for a long time in the U.S., their adoption rates pale in comparison to in-center hemodialysis therapies. In most cases, these home dialysis therapies are offered as secondary, poorly supported programs by in-center dialysis centers.<
><
>WellBound: Committed to Home-Based Kidney Therapies<
>WellBound's mission is to take a fundamentally new approach to kidney care, focusing on early clinical interventions for late-stage CKD patients, including delivery of the full spectrum of home dialysis therapies (peritoneal dialysis, home hemodialysis and hemofiltration). Research shows that home dialysis therapies and earlier interventions for the treatment of kidney disease lead to superior outcomes for many patients with CKD, giving them greater independence, control and an improved quality of life. <
><
>WellBound's approach also includes a distinctive clinical operation with expert staff dedicated solely to home dialysis therapies; continuous on-call patient support and uniquely tailored educational, wellness and clinical programs oriented to home care patients and their physicians.<
><
>"We believe that home therapies are currently under-utilized and should rise to approximately 25 percent of the market," said Marc Branson, interim CEO. "Our specialized regional centers with early-intervention management programs and the full spectrum of new and proven home therapies will help achieve that goal."<
><
>A New Business Model Supports Nephrologists and Their Patients<
>An important aspect of WellBound's vision is that it will operate its regional centers in close partnership with local nephrology practices. In this way, those physicians most actively involved with guiding patients toward the best kidney-care options will receive direct benefits from participating in WellBound partnerships. And through this partnership approach with nephrology practices, WellBound is able to assure that patients receive the best possible care at each stage of their kidney disease. <
><
>"WellBound
ings together all the resources and services needed to provide unprecedented support to kidney patients and to the nephrologists who treat them," said Branson. "Together, WellBound and the nephrologists can respond positively to patients confronting kidney disease, offering opportunities to achieve superior outcomes and better preserve patients' quality of life."<
><
>"For patients, WellBound provides a warm, friendly atmosphere in which they can receive all the therapies they need, as well as education and support, to achieve the best possible results from a home-based regimen," said Branson. "Our customized, early-intervention management programs will give patients the best opportunity to continue a healthy, active lifestyle for as long as possible."<
><
>From a business perspective, WellBound's nephrology partners are freed of all the processes and administrative tasks required to establish and run the center, so they can concentrate fully on running their own medical practices. WellBound manages all reimbursement, human resources, accounting, clinical management and information systems requirements. Additionally, its state-of-the-art back-end reporting system keeps nephrologists informed of patient outcomes and calculates cross-comparisons with other WellBound programs nationwide, enabling continuous improvements and creating a database for ongoing clinical research.<
><
>About WellBound<
>WellBound is the first healthcare services company dedicated to advanced clinical interventions for patients with CKD and the delivery of the full spectrum of home dialysis therapies through specialized, regional centers. In active partnership with local nephrology practices, these highly focused centers will specialize exclusively on home therapy options, responding to a growing patient population and physician community interested in achieving superior outcomes and better preserving patients' quality of life. The company is actively seeking opportunities to establish more centers in collaboration with physician partners. WellBound received its initial financing from Satellite Healthcare, a company with a 30-year history of providing dialysis services to patients in Northern California.<

You negative? you must be joking! I think of you as positive to the point of overdoing it lol<
>If dialysis units all provided excellent care, pts. were trully able to choose modalities, and pt. education (including selfcare!) were offered, and we still had a gripe THEN we might be considered negative! Until then we're just callin it like it is. Hey, companies, units, government, ect. care to put that to the test? Bring it on already! Lin. (in my dreams!)

Lin I with you await their arrival in our area; but I sooner think I'll see pigs fly. I think I'll see stem cells being used for kidney replacement before I ever see a home program being developed in our area.

...didn't want to sound negative. A bad day I guess!!!!! I was watching some of the congressional "movements" on line and they were not going anyplace as far as H.R. 1759. I was also reminising about this company that is so far going no place. Reminising? Well it is only a couple of months or so and the west coast moves into the situation. Stem cells, Marty? Are we that far behind? Pigs cells seem to fly fly quicker. <
>I can only hope that companies of one sort or the other are recognising where the future is. We all do know and Lin I will try to keep upbeat more than I have.

the problem started with the govt, and the fault is the govt. there is enough money being put in esrd and until the govt sets some standards. pay acording to services given we will not have any changes.

I sent off a letter to my daughter's neph with info about Wellbound. It looks very, very promising.
"Like me, you could.....be unfortunate enough to stumble upon a silent war. The trouble is that once you see it, you can't unsee it. And once you've seen it, keeping quiet, saying nothing, becomes as political an act as speaking out. Either way, you're accountable."
