Isabel. This is indeed big news, and it's carried on just about every major news medium. The drug you're speaking of is manufactured by Ortho Biotech, and is FDA approved and being used currently for bone regeneration. The same company also manufactures the new (in human clinicals) drug Neugene, an anitsense drug that inhibits the growth of the cysts in pkd. I'm sure the dialsyis providers aren't real happy to hear the news! Maybe between these two new treatments there will someday be no need for dialysis. Lin.

We sure need more jobs in Massachusetts if thousands of formerly disabled patients are going to get off of dialysis!<
><
>That
ings up the question of how this new therapy will be distributed... will you no longer have a choice to remain on dialysis if you are of working age? Actually, with the way our Governor has been slashing budgets, I'm surprised he hasn't already
ought up the idea of requiring working-age people to get transplants so they can get back to work and start paying into Social Security again.

Getting a txp. and going back to work sounds super, but if you don't have a high paying job the cost of the drugs will kill you; not all is covered by insurance!<
>I would imagine that the cost of this new protein drug would be covered as it would surely cost less than dialysis. I could go back to work and lead an active life like before; it almost sounds too good to be true! Lin.

if you are now on Medicare/Medicaid only for insurance, and you become healthy enough to go back to work, there is not an insurance company in the US that will touch you for two years because you have a pre-existing medical condition, and all your medical expenses for two years are out-of-pocket. So even if you could go back to work, you would have to make over 100K year to pay all your medical bills for 2 years. Most people's income would put them just over the limit to receive Medicaid, and if you go back to work then Medicare is out the window. So you are da**** if you do and da***** if you don't. A true catch 22 situation. Even though you are well enough to return to work, you still have to be monitored. My lastlab work bill for routine labs, CBC,Chem u,thryoid, was $80.80. My insurance denied it because my PCP did not order it, my neph did, so I was stuck with the entire bill. Just something else for everyone to be on the lookout for.

I doubt the Big 3 are getting nervous. The way our government treats health care issues were all likely to die of old age before they ever let a pill be developed and used to reverse kidney failure. I find in truely amazing that when a company is on the
ink either in stem cell research or in this case a way to reverse kidney failure our government just plods along and doesn't give a whole lot of attention to the issues. You'd think they would look at it as a tremendous cost savings but I think they look at it as hurting big business instead. Just my opinion.
